Synthesis of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/clay-nanosheets composite gels by a -ray irradiation technique

Anisotropic hydrogels of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hybridized with liquid crystalline clay mineral nanosheets (fluorohectorite or montmorillonite) were synthesized by a -ray-induced polymerization and crosslinking techniques. The obtained gels exhibited better mechanical properties; their modulus of compressive elasticity was 17 times higher than that of the conventional crosslinker-based gels.
